Checker Board catalog
#007
This
design is borrowed from an 18th century sgraffito-decorated slipware pot.
There is room on the back side for the owner's name. Many of the original
buckets were painted by self-taught itinerant painters, often trading
their naive skills for room and board in lieu of coin. Some buckets, however,
were sold with the decorative design already applied, needing only a painter
to fill in the owner's name and date. |
